Spider Pig - IRC Optimised Cork 1720 Conversion

Spider Pig began life as a standard Cork 1720 sportsboat before her owner undertook an ambitious conversion to optimise her for IRC racing. NautiData’s 3D laser survey supported the construction work and helped provide sails designed around the yacht’s modified rig.

The deck was removed to allow an interior to be installed. Teak and holly floorboards were fitted alongside pipe cots, with a toilet and galley completing the accommodation. Stanchions and guardrails were added above deck.

These changes formed part of the owner’s IRC optimisation programme. Although the additional fittings increased the yacht’s weight, she was subsequently raced with five crew rather than six. From a distance she remained recognisable as a Cork 1720, but her configuration was far from standard.

Our 3D laser survey captured the yacht as a detailed point cloud, providing a measured reference for the conversion and fitting-out work. We also created a surface mesh of the hull and deck, allowing their shapes and the cockpit arrangement to be examined in detail.

Particular attention was given to the mast’s central position within the hull and its alignment with the keel. The survey allowed us to examine any sideways deviation separately from the mast’s fore-and-aft profile, recording its rake and pre-bend for sail design.

The value of this information became especially clear when an initial set of sails intended for a standard Cork 1720 did not fit the modified rig. Despite her familiar appearance, Spider Pig needed sails designed around her actual geometry.

Using the scan data, the replacement sailmaker could work from the measured mast profile rather than standard class dimensions. The resulting sails fitted correctly first time, demonstrating how accurate survey information could make a practical difference to the finished boat.

Spider Pig went on to become a successful race winner. We were proud to support this IRC optimised Cork 1720 conversion, providing measured information that proved valuable throughout the build and in developing sails to suit her individual setup.
